Most people have or have had one or sevral pets. Having to take care of an animal teaches children responsibility at a young age, or forces grownups to do their daily exersize by grooming their horse, walking their dog or cleaning out the fishbowl.
Our pets always seem to be there for us, no matter what. We come home to find them waiting at the door. They listen without responding. They don't judge. They're there for us through thick and thin, it seems. Perhaps that's because they have no other choice, but it certainly is a nice thought to think that they enjoy our company as much as we enjoy theirs, that they're some kind of guardians in the shape of a furry friend or scaly "sibling".
Since they can't share their thoughts with us, I sometimes find mysef wondering; what is my turtle thinking? If your pet could talk, what would it say of you as an owner? We should ask ourselves that question. Based on our own honest answer, we will be able to find out if we're giving our friend the love and attention it deserves. Even though I don't enjoy being awoken at six thirty in the morning, being told to clean the turtles room because he smeared poop across every square inch of the floor, it's worth it in the long run. The days when I can sit outside in the sun while my turtle grazes in the grass and I watch him, wondering if he is aware of being watched, and wondering what he is thinking, but being quite certain that I have done my best to make him happy.
